Airtel renovates classroom block
Airtel Malawi on Wednesday handed over a school block to Saleya Local Education Authority (LEA) School in Salima that the mobile phone network operator renovated after it became inhabitable.
The renovations, which included electrical installations, has cost Airtel about K7 million (about $10 032).
Airtel Malawi managing director Charles Kamoto said the company adopted the school in 2011 to address various challenges it faced.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Kamoto said Airtel Malawi feels it has a responsibility to contribute towards the country’s future; hence, the renovation of the dual-classroom block.
He said: “Learners are the future of this country and supporting their education is critical to the country’s development. That is why we have decided to support this school and we shall extend to renovate the remaining dilapidated classrooms to ensure that learners have a conducive environment.”
Saleya LEA School has about 2 300 learners against 12 classroom blocks, a situation that forces other pupils to learn under trees.
In his remarks, Salima district education manager Christopher Kumikundi commended Airtel for the gesture which, he said will boost the performance of learners.
Prince Eliya, a Standard Six pupil at the school, said the rehabilitated classroom will keep him focused, admitting that learning under a tree affected his concentration.n
